PDF to Markdown for AI Workflows
Markdown is often easier to work with in text-based AI and LLM workflows than a fixed-layout PDF, since the converted output is plain text with lightweight document structure instead of pages, columns, and embedded formatting.
The AI-Ready mode above normalizes document structure and removes repeated PDF extraction clutter like page headers and footers, without summarizing or rewriting the original source text.
After conversion, you can use the Markdown Cleaner to normalize the output further, the Markdown Chunker to split long documents into manageable sections, or the AI Token Counter to measure text before using it with an AI system.
What PDFs Work Best?
MarkForge works best with PDFs that contain selectable text, such as files exported from Microsoft Word, Google Docs, publishing software, or other digital document tools.
Some PDF layouts are more difficult to reconstruct than others. Multi-column documents, complex tables, unusual fonts, equations, and heavily designed pages may require manual cleanup after conversion.
Scanned or image-only PDFs do not contain normal selectable text. MarkForge currently does not include OCR, so image-only documents cannot be converted accurately. When MarkForge detects one of these files, it displays a scanned-PDF warning instead of pretending the conversion succeeded.

Not currently. Scanned and image-only PDFs require optical character recognition (OCR) before their text can be reliably converted. MarkForge detects documents with little or no selectable text and displays a warning instead.
Does MarkForge preserve headings and lists?
MarkForge attempts to identify headings, bullet lists, numbered lists, paragraphs, links, and simple document structure using information available in the PDF. PDF layouts vary, so complex documents may still require manual review.
Can I use MarkForge Markdown with ChatGPT, Claude, or other AI tools?
Yes. Markdown is plain text, so you can copy MarkForge output into text-based tools that accept Markdown or plain text. Always review the converted document before relying on it, especially when the source PDF contains complex layouts or tables.

What is the maximum PDF file size?
The current browser-processing limit is 50 MB per PDF.
Can I edit the Markdown before downloading it?
